How do I run a first Google Ads campaign without getting it disapproved?
Write an ad that names your product and promises only what its page delivers, and send it to a finished page that loads for Google's crawler. Every ad is reviewed before it runs, and Google says most ads are reviewed within one business day. An ad that breaks a policy is disapproved and cannot show until it is fixed. On cost, Google says there is no minimum spending commitment. You set an average daily budget, and on most campaigns a single day can cost up to 2 times that budget and a month no more than 30.4 times it.
What Google says, in its own words
Google's advertising policies cover four areas: prohibited content, prohibited practices, restricted content and features, and editorial and technical requirements. Its ad review reads your headline, description, keywords, destination, images and video against them.
We take action on content that violates our policies. This may include disapproving violating ads so they don’t serve, as well as suspending accounts for repeat or egregious violations.
Ads or destinations that don't name the product, service, or entity they are promoting
Capitalization that isn't used correctly or for its intended purpose
Punctuation or symbols that aren't used correctly or for their intended purpose
Entering a phone number in ad text
Google requires that your ad destination and contents are crawlable by Google AdsBot web crawlers so we can make sure that users are led to an ad destination that reflects the ad they have clicked on.
Failure to clearly and conspicuously disclose the payment model or full expense that a user will bear before and after purchase is not allowed.
Making inaccurate claims or claims that entice the user with an improbable result (even if this result is possible) as the likely outcome a user can expect is not allowed.
What that means if you have just launched
- Check your category. Google's policy overview says gambling, dating and most cryptocurrency advertisers need its certification first, and that some healthcare products can only be advertised once Google has approved the advertiser.
- Finish the page first. Google's page on ad review says a new webpage must be complete before the ad can be reviewed, and that changing the ad restarts the review.
- Let the crawler in. Under the destination requirements, the page must return no error to Google's AdsBot crawler and open in the locations you target. A redirect to a different domain is a mismatch, and so is a display URL whose domain is not the page's.
- Say what it is and what it costs. An ad that does not name what it promotes is not allowed. The misrepresentation policy wants the full cost disclosed before and after purchase, so a free trial that turns into a paid plan has to say so. It also wants any offer in the ad to be easy to find on the page.
- Expect to prove who you are. Google's verification page says all advertisers will eventually be required to complete advertiser verification, and that your name and location then show in a disclosure on your ads. Its page on timelines says an account that misses a deadline is paused.
- What ends the account. Google's enforcement page says an egregious violation suspends the account at once, with no warning. For other violations it warns at least 7 days before, and repeat violations earn at most 3 strikes per policy. A suspension also takes related accounts, such as ones on the same payment method.
- What it costs. Google's cost guide says there is no flat fee and no monthly subscription. On Search you pay when someone clicks, and each click is priced in an auction, so Google states no price for one.
Approval means the ad broke no rule. It says nothing about whether anyone will buy.
The numbers Google states
| What | What Google says |
|---|---|
| Ad review | Most ads are reviewed within one business day. After more than 2 full business days, check the ad's status. After more than a week, contact Google Ads support. |
| Minimum spend | None. Google's definition of Google Ads says there is no minimum spending commitment. |
| One day | Up to 2 times your average daily budget, for most campaigns. |
| One month | No more than 30.4 times your average daily budget, for most campaigns. A $10 budget means at most $20 in a day and $304 in a month. Manage your spend in Google Ads calls this the monthly charging limit and the spending limits page the monthly spending limit. Same figure. |
| A fixed total | A campaign total budget runs for 3 to 90 days on a Search campaign. Google says you will never be charged more than the total. It is only offered on a new campaign. |
| When you are charged | On postpay, each time your costs reach your payment threshold, and on the first day of the month. Google's page on how often you are charged gives a $50 threshold that might rise to $200 or more once you reach it several times. |
| Paying up front | Google's billing options list the United Kingdom and the United States among the countries where prepay is not available. |
| Verification | Google can take up to 5 business days to review a verification task, and in rare cases up to 30 days. |
None of Google's pages listed below says which rules most often stop a first ad. Google's 2025 Ads Safety Report counts every advertiser together: over 8.3 billion ads blocked or removed and over 24.9 million accounts suspended in 2025. The policies behind the most removals were abusing the ad network (over 1.29 billion ads), personalisation violations (over 755 million), legal requirements (over 646.7 million), misrepresentation (over 421.5 million) and trademark (over 372.7 million). One ad can count under several policies, and the chart has no line for the editorial or destination rules.
How Sami uses it
Sami ranks Google Ads against the other channels for your product and says why it is in or out. Free methods come before paid ones in the plan.
A paid step gets one week if your product is bought on the page, with the spend and the stopping line set before it starts. Should I run ads before anyone has paid? covers whether to test at all and how big the test should be.
Sami never runs the campaign or spends the money. You do. The spend, clicks, signups and payments you bring back as an export or a screenshot each become a dated record. Two figures then decide whether the test worked: what a customer cost you, your customer acquisition cost, and the share of people who clicked and went on to sign up or pay, your conversion rate.
Questions people ask
How long does Google take to approve an ad?
Google's page on the ad review process says most ads are reviewed within one business day and that more complex reviews take longer. After more than a week under review, it says to contact support. Editing the ad restarts the review.
Is there a minimum spend on Google Ads?
No. Google's definition of Google Ads says there is no minimum spending commitment, and its page on managing spend says the amount of your budget is entirely up to you. Whether a small budget can prove anything is a separate question: see how big an ad test should be.
Can Google Ads charge me more than my daily budget?
On a single day, yes. Google's page on spending limits says a campaign might spend up to twice its average daily budget on a given day, and that on most campaigns you will never pay more than 30.4 times that budget in a month.
Can I use a competitor's name in my Google ad?
As a keyword, Google's trademark policy says it will not restrict it. In the ad itself, Google will restrict a trademark used by a direct competitor, but its policy overview says those rules apply only once the trademark owner has submitted a valid complaint.
Should I run Google Ads before anyone has paid?
Not until strangers use your product for free on their own, if it is the kind of product people buy on the page. Ads before customers sets out why, and when to stop a test. It includes the founder's own test for Prep66, an exam preparation site: a Reddit ad at £5 a day, about £25 spent, one signup, no payment, switched off.
